Talking to Powell is what got Bush I to leave Saddam alone in the first place. The "shoot from the hip" types have lost, it looks like, to the "Slow but Careful" approach. We would have knocked off Saddam this summer with a "shoot from the hip" approach, or have been in a bind if that method failed. We will go in the spring with 200,000 men, and Iraq will collapse, IMO.
