The first year my daughter played organized softball, the league forbade formal scorekeeping; after all, any recognition whatsoever (so the league thought) of winning and losing might get in the way of the kids having fun and learning how to play the game.

Without fail, my daughter would announce the final score (accurately) to me after every game, and occasionally asked why no formal score was kept. I told her that some adults were afraid to teach their kids that sometimes in life we lose regardless of how hard we try. At 6 years old, she frankly didn't let losing ruin her day but learned the lesson that losing is part of life.

A couple of parents were rather vocal about how great it was that no one kept score; their kids were afraid to tell them the final score, and those parents blissfully assumed that no one kept track. I felt sorry for them -- parents and kids.
