Interesting Q&A from BigTalk:
Jim Mullens, Huntington Beach, Ca: Hi Andy- hope your back problems are getting better. We have recently seen reports from Flarion stating that their OFMD technology can provide a less expensive alternative to 3G- delivering data (384 Kbps to 1.5Mbts) at $10/POP vs $100/POP for adding CDMA 1X. (ie: 200 M pops network = $2B vs $20 B). I recall PCS stating their 1X upgrade CapEx at $700M to $1B (much less than $20B). Flarion is doing a trial with Nextel. Do you have any insight on Flarion and/or the cost to upgrade a CDMA network to 1X? (also, the cost ($/pop) to upgrade a GSM network to QUALCOMM’s proposed GSM1X? Thanks again for this forum.

Andrew Seybold: Thanks Jim--my back is better but healing slowly-but I can sit up and take food now!!! LOL--anyway I don't want to comment on Flarioin directly--they are testing with Nextel and your numbers for Sprint PCS are about on the mark from what I understand--however I believe that the ONLY way a wireless operator is going to be able to justify upgrading to either technology--Flariou or EV-DO is if a content provider steps in and helps finance the network upgrade--some really interesting stuff is going on in this area at the moment so stand by
