Eric,
As yourself, I have spent what seems a life time in the wilds, but in different circumstances, places, times and with different people. After a good laugh from reading some of your posts, I sometimes wonder if I was exposed to some mind altering agent in the environment that causes me to appreciate your perspective and humor? The only likely shared and repeated exposure to chemicals entering the blood stream I could think of is that perhaps we both have suffered from too many black fly bites? It is well known that black flies have an anesthetic in their saliva so the victim is unaware of the assault, but now I wonder if there are also some psychotropic, mind altering, pharmacological qualities that have not been recognized or documented? Perhaps this is why First Nations people can't be easily culturally assimilated? As an experiment, it would be interesting to drop all the politicians into the wilds of Northern Ontario during black fly season for a week with no bug dope. One can only guess as to what effect it would have on legislation and policy direction.
