What you mention is true but the difference is that EZ has separate governments, armies tax laws etc. EZ does not have a Federal agreement similar to the US. Therefore Mississippi can not be compared with Portugal for example. Interests are national in EZ not so in the various states of the US.

Electorate in theory can demand removal from the EZ agreements not so in the US. Would like to see Texas leave the US and declare itself an independent state.
