We will never know, I suppose, whether the case was not pursued because there was no evidence of wrongdoing or because the career bureaucrats at SEC were reluctant to mess with a politically influential individual. I'd expect this reluctance to prevail regardless of the color of the administration: one never knows who will be in next, and nobody in Government wants powerful enemies. Personally, I care about as much as I cared about Clinton's extramarital affairs, which is to say not at all. Given our political system, I think it most unlikely that any of these guys are as pure as the driven snow, unless we're talking about the driven snow in Jersey City. I don't see that it has any impact on his ability to govern. I do suspect that a few people in the Democratic establishment are a bit embarrassed at not having come up with that particular tidbit during the campaign. It was also sobering to be reminded of what I already knew: that Bush's career as a businessman was so thoroughly devoid of success. It would be nice to have a Presidential candidate, someday, that had really excelled at something, somewhere, other than politics.
