On 'ordinary' days, quite often gold stocks move in the opposite direction of gold the previous day. I suspect that many people check the price of gold at the end of the day and then place their orders the next day. However, if the volume is heavy in general, and all eyes seem to be on gold and gold stocks, then the stocks and gold seems to move in step together.

Right now the excitement seems to be over, and gold is perhaps building a base near these prices. Watch again when the common perception is that gold is starting to make a big move. It will take several days of solid gains or losses for that to happen.
