Canon, SGI Japan Develop Virtual Driving System

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Canon Inc. (7751) and SGI Japan Ltd. have developed a system that replicates the experience of driving an automobile.

This system employs mixed-reality technology, which combines real-world images with computer graphics, to simulate a realistic driving experience.

Canon and SGI Japan foresee applications in auto design, driving instruction and arcade games. A car designer could use the technology, for example, to obtain an accurate picture of the placement and appearance of gauges and controls at the design stage.

The system includes a head-mounted display and a high-powered computer that generates graphics. Canon was in charge of developing the display, and SGI Japan was in charge of graphics-processing technology.

The head-mounted gear is outfitted with sensor equipment, a video camera and an LCD. Sensor equipment detects the head's position, allowing for adjustments that heighten the reality of the experience. The camera shoots the area around the system user. These video images are displayed on the liquid crystal screen with computer graphics, including those of instrumentation, layered on top.
