I would say that it is Israel's neighbors who are taking the abuse and pounding. Thirty plus years of occupation, brutality and illegal settlements are enough to provoke anger and extremism in the most passive of people. Three hundred plus Israeli soldiers and civilians killed by sucicide bombers is horrible but not as horrible as 1300 (mostly civilians and children) murderd by Israeli occupation forces tanks, jets, helicopter gunships, and assassinations. I oppose Hamas and their Islamic agenda but their spiritual leaders did speak a profound and neglected truism yesterday. He told Mr. Bush : 'You give Israel tanks, jets, and helicopter gunships to kill the occupied Palestinian people. We have none of these weapons to defend ourselves against the occupying forces. Martyrs are the only weapon availabe to kill the occupying Israeli enemy. We will be happy to defend ourselves against the occupiers and kill our enemies with tanks, jets and helicopter gunships if you provide us with these weapons as you do the occupiers.'
