I think the convert numbers are presented, not as an argument to market share statistics, but as an argument to the premise that Apple is selling to the same customer base repeatedly and is therefore vulnerable to exit migration within a maturing market settling onto a single dominant standard. It is to counter the disinformation being put out that favors this kind of self fulfilling prophesy.

In reality the markets are very fluid at some level where say 10 to 15% of new purchasers are either new or converted and some unknown number of the 95% purchasing Wintels are X-Mac users.

While it's true that 15% of Apple's share of the market is minscule in the vastness of outer computer space, it is none-the-less significant in providing evidence of Apple's relative strength.
