"Its a total loss" says rancher Dennis L. Quast, who eight years ago traded cattle for buffalo, expecting big profits. In March, he auctioned off his 450 buffalo for about $300 each -- compared with the $3,000 he paid a few years back. Now the 51-year-old is renting his North Dakota land to a cattleman and starting over in estate planning in California.
