Most of Ellison's claims about the direction of the software biz get vindicated at some point. No matter what people say about Ellison, he has the best sense of forward vision of any software exec I've ever read about.

Aint that the truth. I was a basher of Oracle in 98 when I thought they weren't focusing on apps and Larry was off on the yacht. Oracle had a bad year that year, but then so did app software. Anyway Larry's proposal of the NCA aka 3-tier architecture for apps (I credit larry with this, he was the first who presented the model) was being adopted by the industry at that very moment. 18 mos later Psft 8 came out and that product turned psft around. Now Oracle 11i apps are gaining momentum around here- I can tell. But SV is not enough of a mkt (anymore) to turn ora apps around. Still, my guess is 11i picks up the apps business maybe late this year/next. Overall I'm happy with oracle holding up and rising in this terrible bear. Also comm infrastructure companies have finally turned around and they led software in the decline so maybe this is the bottom for software. Pure conjecture I know.
