From my point of view the "point" would be to create the "killer", top of the line MOBO that might sell in the high hundreds of thousands per quarter but which would dominate benchmarks to the extent possible.

If it costs double the going price, OK. The object shouldn't necessarily be to sell product -- but to win benchmarks and gain recognition.
