jcky, try to picture this scene. Colin Powell goes to Hosni Mubarak and tell him that it is very likely that Israel will shell Cairo, but for the sake of the regional alliance and his $2 billion in aid, he must just suck it up and make no response.

How many milleseconds do you think it would take before Mubarak threw him out of his office and told him to go f--k himself?

Why do you expect Israel to perform acts of self-abnegation and self-endangerment that nobody would ever consider asking of any other country?

And before you answer, 'because we guarantee to bail Israel out', remember that we have bailed the Arabs out of the consequences of their foolish wars, more than once. We stopped the 1973 as soon as Israel had begun to win it, and made them hand back the Egyptian territory they had taken, so that Egypt could actually convince itself that it had won the war (the Arabs are excellent at this form of face-saving self-delusion). So why don't we expect Egypt to obey us at least as much as Israel?
