semi, What more logical method of vertical integration than AMD becoming part of a major boxmaker. Another possibility, it looks like AMD will be making chipsets as well as mobos....I suppose it can also become a boxmaker and become a direct to market clone of Dell with that ability. Bill
AMD has no choice. Actually, I think intel should pretty much tell MickeyD to take his little mind games and shove it. I can't speak for others on this thread, but I'm pretty sick and tired of his "MAYBE we'll use AMD" crap. If you're gonna do it, then shut the hell up and do it. If I were Craig, I'd pick up the phone, call Mickey, and say "Fine, go use whoever the hell you want, cause I'm done playing this Game" <click>.
And IF AMD is planning on box making, one question that comes to my mind, is where is AMD going to get the financial resources that would be required to do it? It doesn't appear to me that AMD has that kind of money on hand, and I think they'll have a hard time convincing the banks to extend credit for a "new" box maker, in a down market. So where is the money to do it going to come from?
A second issue is what are AMD's ScrewDriver Shop buddies going to think about "competing" against their Chip Supplier for Whitebox sales? I don't think it's going to make them too happy. It's the main reason intel had to kill their own Whitebox effort. It pissed off too many customers.
Can all these roadblocks be overcome? Sure. But it isn't going to be easy. And I'm just not willing to bet my investment money on it's success. That's all I'm saying.
