VLSI's IC index shows no change in holiday week

SAN JOSE -- In an indication that the chip market has stabilized, VLSI Research Inc.'s spot-market IC pricing index hit 83.5 for the week of July 8, which was no change from the previous week.

The Chip Price Performance Index (CPPI) in relation to Moore's Law widened for the fifth week as a result, moving from 12.8 to 13.7 points, according to the San Jose-based market research firm. More importantly, this is the first time that the CPPI has remained above Moore's curve for a solid six months.

VLSI's Chip Price/Performance Index (CPPI) measures chip prices relative to performance and functionality. It is an indicator of industry health that factors out the normal price decreases that occur due to Moore's Law.

The CPPI is re-indexed to 100 at the beginning of each year. A CPPI of 50 means the industry delivered roughly the same functionality for half the price at the first week of the year or double the functionality for the same price.

In general, the IC market has stabilized after a recent fall. The index was at 106.3 for the week of May 20, 107.1 for May 27, 82.5 for June 3, 84.2 for June 10, 83.6 for June 17, 82.9 for June 24, and 83.5 for July 1, according to VLSI Research.
