i am not saying we do the same thing,no way! It just happened that that war that was thrust upon us ignited a chain of events the turned the U.S. into an economic powerhouse.
Just looking back at the past with a pragmatic analysis.
One thing i can say, that those that charge that FDR wanted the war to revive our economy is a scandalous smear.
The Fact is this., WWII was already 2plus years in progress. And we were still in isolationist mode, and we were NOT ramping up for war.
On the Day of Infamy, we were NOT close to being ready for a war. We didn't have an army, navy and airforce ready to fight a war.
The 30 seconds over Tokyo Doolittle squadron attack was just a symbolic gesture.
Some historians believe our sudden charge to action on all fronts was one the most stunning acts of "doing the impossible' in a short space of time, in history.
And then when FDR, almost as an after thought, signed the G.I.Bill, did not know he was signing one the most revolutionary bills in our history, it actually was a momentous event.
Our campuses filled up with not chubby cheeked , college boys out to have fun. We had campuses with the most matured men on campus ever, these were men that had survived war.
And many many of them came from backgrounds that would never have been able to go to college and were out to prove all they needed was the chance.
Many an aged professor will say those post war years college students were the best student body in the history of the United States.( i saw them saying it in a documentary, and with passion and conviction they said this)
The G.I. bill was not only a major victory for democracy.
But it , in a major, way, poured a large amount of highly trained and educated people into our country. Max
<<There was not a single German city that was recognizeable as a place where people used to live left standing in 1945. >> No country ever deserved what they got more than what Germany got. What immerged out of Germany in the 30s was as evil and fearsome a force that the world had ever seen--though Charles Lindberg thought they were just great!(Lindberg was a fascist). But we stayed behind and saw to it that Germany be rebuilt and we even set up deprogramming centers to break the propaganda buried into the minds of their youth. BTW, if America had not done what it did Gemany and Japan would have divided the world between themselves at first, and then started a massive war of Empire Nazi Germany against Empire Samurai Japan. o that would have been NEAT!
