I was pleased to see this news out of Czech Republic today. Ericsson (early) and now Nokia are picking off a lot of the orders for MMSCs and terminal gateways, and the good news is that carriers are really investing in MMS.

My personal feeling is that by the end of 2003 we will see some real momentum gathering for MMS.

The Czech Republic's Eurotel has signed a Letter of Intent with Nokia following it's decision to select the Nokia's MMS solution. Under the agreement, Nokia will supply a complete end-to-end MMS solution, including the Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), the Terminal Gateway and extension of the Nokia Artuse WAP Gateway.

In addition, Nokia will provide implementation and integration, The Nokia Terminal Gateway allows users of non-MMS legacy phones to enjoy MMS as well. When multimedia messages are sent to legacy phones, their users receive an SMS notification directing them to a Web site where they can access their MMS message.

"Eurotel is committed to maintaining a leadership position in innovative technology," says Terrence Valeski, CEO of Eurotel. "With the new MMS we would like to bring our customers closer to the products and services that are taking us ever nearer to the next generation of mobile phone services. These developments will, in turn, lead to greater use of mobile phone services by customers".

Eurotel is currently testing MMS services with about 100 customers before a full commercial launch. <<

Eurotel and Nokia have signed a Letter of Intent following Eurotel's decision to select the Nokia system for multimedia messaging (MMS) as its MMS solution, following MMS testing since May. This solution will allow users of MMS-capable phones to send messages combining text, images, graphics and sound in a single rich message directly to other MMS terminals, e-mail addresses, or to users of non-MMS mobile phones.

Under the agreement, Nokia will supply a complete end-to-end MMS solution, including the Nokia Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), the Nokia Terminal Gateway and extension of the Nokia Artuse WAP Gateway. In addition, Nokia will provide implementation and integration,

Eurotel is the only mobile operator in the Czech Republic to offer two cutting-edge technologies for mobile (wireless) data transfer. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) are available to both postpaid and prepaid customers. Eurotel has leading position in corporate market and its corporate customers exetensively use data services.
