John:

I really do not believe anyone read that far. The story was positioned as if we were about to get some spending on telecom...that and the Juniper results were too much, and in the end, all we really got was a short squeeze.

The telcos have said it: spending will come when returns are guaranteed. That means the competition problem goes away, AND there is content going down the pipes that people want. As far as I can tell, the only content people will pay for is voice and video. As long as there is a physical separation between them, there will be no convergence. No convergence, means no cost reductions. After all, it is duplication, no?

Give WorldCom to an RBOC, but at the same time free up the cable cos from local regulation. Then things would get interesting again for JDSU.
