<<I didn't even know there was an Ogallala, Nebraska. >>

You should have watched Lonesome Dove and read Mitchener's Texas.

Kind of got into some aquifer study during the wet year about 12 years ago. I had some land in Mason County 70 miles west of me. The water table averages about 16' down. It came up because it couldn't dump into the Illinois River. Crops and homes were flooded from below, roads had to be filled in with gravel and coffins floated out of the ground.

Some of the water came down the old Mississippi River bed that's now 100 miles west and some came from Pennsylvania.

A lake that had been gone for years formed. The local paper was kind of funny about reporting it. First week, NIGGER LAKE IS BACK. Second week, NEGRO LAKE IS BACK. Third week it was SAND LAKE IS BACK.
