Colonial Downs Job Fair Attracts Tremendous Turnout ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colonial Downs reported that its job fair held on Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13, attracted an enormous number of applicants from across Virginia. The race track interviewed people for about 350 positions.
"Colonial Downs is fortunate to choose from such a qualified pool of applicants as we have here in Virginia," said Stan Bowker, who is responsible for overall operations. "We believe this turnout underscores the great level of interest in Colonial Downs' purpose as a new sport and family entertainment facility in Virginia."
"The applicants represented a wide variety of Virginia localities, and we even had attendance from outside the state," said Sandra Sanders, director of human resources. "However, this is not the only chance to apply for positions. We are continuing to accept applications at our job center in Providence Forge." She added that applicants must apply in person.
Colonial Downs interviewed people for a wide variety of full-time and seasonal positions at the track. Sanders said they expect to complete the selection process within two weeks. All employees will be provided training at various training facilities in and around New Kent County. Colonial Downs reported that positions are available for a variety of full-time and seasonal positions in the following areas:
Administration: Administrative Assistants, Clerical, Receptionists
Finance: Clerks, Horsemen's Bookkeeper, Money Room Manager, Money Room Clerks
Marketing: Bugler, Special Events
Facilities: Cleanup Crew, Housekeeping, General Maintenance, Equipment Operators, Maintenance Superintendent, Mechanic
Mutuel Tellers
Security: Fire Prevention, Law Enforcement Officers
Guest Services: Admissions Personnel, Guest Services, Parking, Program & Daily Racing Form Sales, Ticket Supervisor
Food Services: Bussers, Cashiers, Chef, Commissary, Concession Stand, Cooks, Track Kitchen Manager, Waitstaff
Seasonal positions will run through the fall thoroughbred racing season, from Sept. 1, 1997 thorough Oct. 12, 1997. More applicants will be interviewed for the spring standardbred racing season, beginning in April 1998.
During racing seasons, the track will employ about 500 people, and the racing centers, two of which are already in operation, will employ about 100 people each.
