During the cold war the Arab nations lined up politically and militarily with the Soviet Union, and Israel's presence was the only thing that stopped the Soviets from taking over the world's richest oil fields.

In addition, Yasser Arafat is Saddam Hussein's closest ally, and he declared his support for Iraq during the Gulf War.

Are you surprised that the US tends to line up on the side of the only Democratic country in the Middle East?
