Yes India is a very stable democracy and indeed the world's largest. But the India-US relations have not been all that great in the past 50 years. India has been closer to the Soviet Union than the US. You would imagine that the freedom loving people of India would be closer to the freedom loving people of the US. However, the US drove India to the Soviet block with its policy of going against India's interest over that of US' narrow interests. And besides the Indians are not all that rich as the Jewish Americans are who have bought their way into the halls of power of the US. However, the Indian nuclear bomb is exactly India's reply to the US and its foreign policy. However, Bush, after taking office has stated very clearly that he intends to improve the relations with India as he values the relationship with a democratic country.

And Scumbria, by the way, India was one of the first countries to recognize Israel, not because Israel is a democracy but because India knows the challenges of growing pains of a young nation surrounded by enemies wishing their destruction. And hence they understood the plight of the Israelis. And India was also to tell all its Arab friends including Egypt (its staunch all becuase of the Suez crisis of 1956), that India did not support the Arab world in its policies towards Israel.

The oil prices shot up in India because of that, since India receieves subsidized oil from the Arab world. But hey, India doesn't care. They would rather pay higher oil prices than back down and be bought out. That was the Gandhian philosophy.
