you really need to abandon this idea that the atkins approach is inferior because top athletes are not rushing out to endorse it. everybody knows that (at least in the last generation) atkins pioneered the research into low-carb diets. dr sears wanted to sell a lot of books and couldn't totally copy dr atkins, so he came up with his zone approach and then targeted athletes for endorsements.

dr atkins on the other hand is a medical doctor who has treated 70,000 patients with all sorts of medical conditions, often with the associated obesity that tends to occur in patients with medical conditions.

dr atkins has dedicated his life's work to helping people who have any number of chronic conditions and obesity -- which numbers in the tens of millions of people.

all these super athletes you brag about that have been successful on the zone are a very tiny segment of the population and therefore a waste of dr atkins' time.

you can try to goad me all you like by saying i can't find an example of a high performance athlete on atkins, but as i said before, i have no desire to try, because it totally misses the point.

for one thing athletes are not going to be attracted to dr atkins because they are already going to be fit and trim and probably not suffering from any serious medical conditions.

secondly, (and this is the point you seem to fail to understand), but the dr atkins diet is totally suited for athletes anyway. induction is only for the first two weeks unless you are so fat that you desire to stay on it longer to accelerate your weight loss.

once you reach your goal weight (which i assume high performance athletes are very close to), you are supposed to calculate your critical carbohydrate level--which essentially means slowly raise the carbs in your diet as high as you like as long as you are not gaining weight. well i'm sure that an elite athlete that trains several hours a day can burn off a large amount of carbs, and probably depletes his vitamin and mineral stores faster. so naturally he can eat more carbs. all these bases are covered in the atkin plan.

the only difference is, atkins is superior to the zone because while the athlete can increase his intake of carbohydrate laden veggies and fruits, he will not be a sucker and leave out important dietary things such as egg yolks and red meat.

sears will have the athlete eating more carbs but less of the super healthy foods like beef and egg yolks and butter.
