Israel was attacked by a huge Arab army about 6 hours after the British withdrew in 1948. They lost about 1% of their population fighting for their right to exist.

Perhaps it would have suited you better had they just submitted to genocide? I doubt they were inclined to do this, having just been released from Nazi concentration camps.
