benefits
ok
I don't use the word blessings

I subsume the benefits under the history/social studies standard
because that is where it is

I'm one of the few teachers apparently teaching that, so don't think I'm not into American pride- I just don't need to shrink wrap that pride in a religious wrapper. I only found out my students (2nd and 3rd graders) knew nothing about the revolutionary war when I had them write in their journals about the 4th of July. So like any good teacher I found a way to combine my mission (teaching reading and writing) with a bit of history. Whether they remember what I taught them, I won't know. But the seeds were planted. We went over our historical connection to England (none of my students knew of this! So I taught them the cute rhyme about the Georges- hoping that may make them remember the Georges and the American connection. It always helped me), we went over George Washington, and who He was in the war (none of them knew he was a general), we went over the general outlines of the war, including the winter at Valley Forge- which made an impression on me when I was a child. We went over Paul Rever and the Boston Tea Party and WHY we had the Boston Tea Party. And of course we talked about who won the war. "Are we still British subjects?" I asK. Children nod yes. Oh dear. More explanations followed about why we are NOT. I won't bore you with those. It took a long time. I'm not sure I convinced them all.

Walter Savage Landor

to the Georges:

George the First was always reckoned Vile, but viler George the Second;
And what mortal ever heard
Any good of George the Third?
when from earth the Fourth descended
(God be praised!) the Georges ended!

( I change that God be praised of course- to thank goodness)
