We were talking here about various practices and theories that have been assumed to be based on science but that were really just notional....

There's a program on public TV tonight that reminds me of that discussion. (It's on tonight at 10pm EST and again on Saturday at 2:00am (meaning you have to set your VCR the night of Friday the 19th before you go to sleep.) Ever since I read a book by a mother of autistic twins about what it was like to be blamed for their condition, I've hated arrogant shrinkdom for that cruel mistake.

(I'll be taping then because at 10: tonight there's a program I've gotten caught up in, Houston Medical, described as "real life ER.")

Here's the description, for anyone who's interested:

P.O.V.
Refrigerator Mothers

60 min.

In “Refrigerator Mothers,” seven mothers of autistic children born in the 1950s and '60s describe the burdens caused by their being blamed for their offsprings' autism at a time when it was believed that the neurological disorder was caused by maternal coldness (hence the term “refrigerator mother”). “What have we done that was so awful?” asks one. The hour also explores how the blame-the-mother theory took hold (its major proponent was legendary developmental psychologist Bruno Bettelheim), and how it was gradually disproved.
