Certainly the left will scream, but that's not going to bother Bush (or Ashcroft, who I suspect has higher ambitions); those people aren't going to vote for them in any event. I hope that conservatives will protest aggressively as well. That would make the administration sit up and listen; they can't afford to alienate their core constituents. This sort of thing goes way beyond ideology: once a system like this is set up, it will be very hard to dismantle, and the potential for abuse is obvious. Nobody should be willing to give a government they like a power that they wouldn't want to see used by a government they don't like, because when government changes hands the power will still be there, and it will be used.

I don't see how anybody who has ever complained about "big government" can possibly be behind this. I'm interested to see what comment jla and Bill have to make.
