Others of similar persuasion have had the same wet dreams. Not gonna happen.

I said he had ambitions; I didn't say I thought his ambitions likely to be fulfilled.

There are things, though, that I do worry about these days. I remember commenting after 9/11 that if Osama was smart he would, having made his point on the grand scale, forget about DC and NY and concentrate on terror attacks in cities across Middle America.

If that actually did happen, there is a very real possibility of the kind of internal strife that hasn't hit this country since the Vietnam war, meaning up to and including organized violence. The grounding for the strife is already there, as we saw during the last election. Place that in the context of "defend us at all costs" vs. "civil liberties are the bedrock of the country" and you have a recipe for a terribly divisive time.

Ashcroft seems just the type to step into a situation like that and cast himself as the man of the hour.

I must confess, I really do not like the man. It goes beyond ideology; it gives me the chills to see his image on TV. I get one of the strongest "dangerous man" vibes from him that I've ever had from anybody. Totally subjective, of course, and I wouldn't expect anybody else to place any credence in it, but I've learned to trust my instincrts about people, especially when those instincts are screaming at me.

I just hope his moment never comes.
