KT,

Buy and hold really does work. My wife has just 8 choices in her 401K plan, all watered down, broad funds (like TOTAL Bond Market, TOTAL stock market, etc.). I just noticed from Vanguard's site that the 5-year return of the S&P500 fund is 0.59% compounded annually, or 2.99% for the past 5 years (at least it's positive...). If their MM fund is similar to my CREF MM fund, that money returned 4.87%/year for a total return of 26.84%. The only thing holding up the S&P fund now is the current MM rate of 1.58% which has gotta seem like watching corn grow for most people (but still better watching corn cobs on the compost heap). Anyway, for the past 3-4 years, she's had most of her money in the MM fund and slept well at night.
