Wolfowitz Leaves Turkey

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 17.07.2002 - U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz returned to his country after completing his contacts with Turkish officials in Ankara and Istanbul.
Before hýs departure, Wolfowitz told reporters at Ataturk Airport that his contacts with Turkish government officials were very successful. ''I had the chance to learn Turkey's views on many issues,'' he said. He also remarked that Turkey's EU membership was very important both from Turkey's and the EU's point of view.

''Turkey-U.S. relations developed significantly especially after Sept. 11,'' he said. ''Turkey is important because of not where it is but what it is. Turkey's success is very important for the United States. Therefore we wanted to learn Turkey's views on Iraq and other regional issues. Turkey's leading role in Afghanistan is also very pleasing.''

About the Saddam regime and the U.S. plans regarding Iraq's future, Wolfowitz said ''Our president stated it clearly. The Saddam regime is a big threat for both America and other countries. We want Iraq to be a democratic country which can protect its territorial integrity. We don't want a Kurdish state in Northern Iraq. Washington's decisions to realize these will benefit all its friends.''

When a reporter said that the Russian Foreign Minister earlier stated that the UN's decision was needed to carry out an operation against Iraq, Wolfowitz said the U.S. President valued the views of all countries including Russia. But he said that listening to these views do not necessarily mean agreeing with them.

''We should not wait for something very bad happen to start this operation against Iraq,''he continued. ''The Saddam regime is very dangerous. We cannot wait for the worst thing to happen. Turkey's views on this matter is more important to us than other countries'.''

He said that his country had no certain date for the Iraqi operation.
