This is something you would expect from Tyco or Worldcom but not AMAT!

I agree and am inclined to believe it was merely a rumor. Unsubstantiated rumors regularly make it out of news outlets lately. Hopefully that is really the case here, as I look upon AMAT mgt as being second to none. Their executives know all the rules and are veterans; it would be shocking to me if indeed they had made an obvious violation of securities law. If one cannot trust them, whom can one trust?
