They're just saying "the gene in sperm triggers the crucial process by which an egg starts dividing to form an embryo."

Dead sperm and dead ova obviously wouldn't work. They both have 'life'... I mean, after all, they're alive. But scientists have evidently been looking for 200 years for what the mechanism is that makes the dividing step (starting the embryo) begin. Now they've found it, those clever buggers.

Something about that doesn't seem like a great idea, but what do I know.
