[jonkai] suggests that Apple needs to have a major product intro every 6 months.

Apple is very nearly there already...

and now you say every quarter?

Sure. However, upon reflection I think rather than more revolutionary products, what Apple needs is follow through.

I mean the original iMac was great but it took a long time for a follow-up product in that area (the flat panel iMac). Heck they didn't even upgrade it to 17" until this year. The same is the case for the star-fish powerMacs. Too long between introduction and substantial revision.

Faster rev cycles extract more money from leading-edge users while at the same time making the upgrade proposition more compelling for the plain folk like Doren.

Only in the last six to twelve months has Apple learned to make minor improvements routine, without waiting for a major event to announce them. Now they need to learn to make major revisions routine. Six months from now Apple should announce the 19" iMac and eMac, without great fanfare or anything else.

In the same time frame Apple should also announce the movie iPod: a color iPod that allows movies to be downloaded so you can watch on the plane. Or perhaps the gameboy iPod, or the PalmPilot iPod.... you get the picture: a substantial revision in functionality and capabilities of the iPod not just an increase in disk size and drop in price (although that was the right thing to do at this time).
