I actually have a lot of respect for a certain type of corporate executive. There are executives who know every nut and bolt of their companies, and devote every scrap of their energy and skill to cultivating those companies and building them into strong, successful, growing concerns. Our economy is built on executives of this sort.

There's another kind as well, one that's always been with us but which achieved prominence in the '90s. I'm talking about the ones that flit from company to company and industry to industry, focusing more on mergers, acquisitions, and deal-making than on managing their companies.

In the first category I think you'd find a large majority of honest, hard-working individuals. In the second category I think you'd find a large number of fundamentally shady quick buck artists who make a living out of cutting corners.

Obviously that is oversimplified, and there are many shades in between, but the basic distinction remains.
