Okinawa is analagous to the West Bank status since 1994. Civilian control with a greatly resented foreign military presence.

The Okinawans have smartly chosen non-violent protest, and getting on with their lives rather than sending their teenagers out to throw rocks at American soldiers, which would no doubt cause many of them to be shot.
