Stewart Brand in "The Clock of the Long Now" of the future proposes building a mechanical clock that would tick once a year, and strike once every ten thousand years. Such a clock, he says, would help us to forget about our immediate concerns and think about the truly important--the Long Now.

I'm a forester. I devoted my life to growing crops that will outlive me and my children's children.
I'm not committed yet to Brand's philosophy. I have to make sure this is not some haven of ecoterrorists who would rather see a tree add to global warming by releasing all its carbon through decay than have that same tree sequester its carbon in human shelter and benefit. The idea of The Clock of the Long Now rings true, it rings true.

Here is a link.

The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996 to develop Clock and "Library" projects as well as to become the seed of a very long term cultural institution. It has been nearly 10,000 years since the end of the last ice age and the beginnings of civilization. Progress lately is often measured on a "faster/cheaper" scale. The Long Now Foundation seeks to promote "slower/better" thinking and to foster creativity in the framework of the next 10,000 years.
