Help the ol' man, here, Jim. ...Re: Dnorman's question: "How does one protect their assets that will still be in brokerage accounts?"

What if all my eggs are with one broker, like Schwab, and the bank where Schwab keeps my eggs is visited by an egg suckin' dog?...derivative explosion?...whatever?

Questions: What can go wrong here...is this a potential problem? If so, what happens to my eggs? How can I protect them? How can I find out about this stuff now regarding my specific broker, rather than a year from now when something hits the headlines?.....TIA...jj
