I agree with gold_tutor in that you see what you are looking for, and the generalizations (America is bad or America is great) do not really say anything.

An example from my own life... Back in the 80's there was an Atlantic magazine with the cover story being about America's cocaine use. The article cited a number in the neighborhood of 100 billion dollars of cocaine was being used per annum in this country. I felt like that statistic summed everything up for me. We are the most selfish, self-centered nation in history. I wrote a letter to the editor, but never sent it, because on the radio that next morning President Reagan cited another statistic.... that we had done 200 billion dollars worth of volunteerism that year.

I realized that one stat did not tell the whole story, and the a nation is not a homogenous whole, but made up of individuals, as gold_tutor notes, who are all in different places.

The Melting Pot notion of our nation is also a myth. We are a Tossed Salad, with lots of great varieties of vegies and other tasty morsels... though also some rotten stuff (good stuff that done gone bad) ..

Anyways.... just my two cents. (gold coins, preferably)
