Bill: I used an a Radio Shack TRS 80 computer and an Osbourne portable computer in the "early days". They were the best products around -- pre-dos. Osbourne went bankrupt in about 7 years, despite being the only game in town for most of that time in portable computing -- a category that turned out to be huge 15 years later. Radio Shack was completely eclipsed by other players with superior resources and marketing capability. TIVO? It probably has a 50/50 chance of surviving. The niche is so small, few want to bother with it yet. If and when this market develops into something worth pursuing, TIVO has a chance of surviving the growth and shakeout of the industry. Are there any barriers to entry in TIVO's market? How long would it take SONY to do something similar if not better? But it also has a chance of sliding off the stock exchange and being delisted -- never to be heard of again. Enjoy your tv watching.
