Has anyone thought about the impact of middleware such as IBM's and BEA's on the profitability of SW companies such as SEBL, SAP, ORCL...?

And what is the impact, do you think? The only thing that occurs to me is the possibility that you think that improving middleware will enable companies to mix and match from multiple vendors instead of buying suites, but that has been talked about for years without much sign of it becoming a significant factor. Sure, one can use middleware to connect, say, Siebel to SAP, but the only one losing anything in that exchange is SAP not selling their own CRM ... a product area where they aren't a leader.
