Ding! And you win the prize!

Your post does an extraordinary job of pinpointing the total weakness of William's investment strategy. The shame of it is that he KNOWS the difference, but steadfastly clings to illogical views.

The first time I played video poker in Vegas I had a straight flush. I didn't realize my good fortune until later. After reading a short book on the subject I conclude there's no way I could win and that the game was pretty lame. Why is it then that there are thousands of video poker machines in Vegas? 1. because some people are just plain dumb and 2. the smart ones know the fallacy of the gamble but do it for the thrill anyway. People like William do it for the thrill. They hit the Royal Flush and then proceeded to drop quarter after quarter until it's all gone. Then they slam us for not demonstrating the same self-destructive tendency.
