More and more function is concentrated in the middleware.

I just don't see how this makes sense ... i.e., it seems like one of those analogies that someone might make who didn't know anything about the architecture of the products involved.... sounds more meaningful than it really is. Siebel in particular has already gotten to the point that they have flyweight browser clients and an incredibly distributable, scalable architecture ... trying to run that on one of those appservers would only ruin it ... including the Java part. Java just doesn't cut the mustard for that kind of scalability.
