You ask if anyone has a better number. Well, here are 8 PEs based on Friday's close, just take your pick:

Based on Operating Earnings:
2003 Forward 14
2002 Forward 17
2001 Trailing 22

As Reported earnings:
2003 Forward 19
2002 Forward 24
2001 Trailing 34

The fashionably discredited Fed Model uses a rolling forward PE ratio, giving a PE of 15 based on operating earnings. Using reported earnings, the PE is 21.

At the end of the day, any of the 8 could be valid as long as the numbers they are compared against are calculated in the same way.
