Dell snatches market share from rivals
By Michelle Kessler, USA TODAY
Dell Computer is grabbing market share from rivals Gateway and Hewlett-Packard, according to numbers issued Thursday by two research firms. Dell now has about 15% market share worldwide — a more than 13% jump year-over-year, researchers Gartner and IDC say. It's the No. 2 PC vendor worldwide.
"And at the rate they're growing, they're not going to be No. 2 for too long," says Gartner analyst Martin Reynolds.
H-P took over the top spot with 15% share, thanks to its merger with Compaq Computer. But that's down about 16% from H-P's and Compaq's combined share a year ago. That was an expected consequence of the deal, IDC analyst Roger Kay says.
Gateway, which reported its second-quarter earnings Thursday, saw its U.S. share plunge more than 18%. In the quarter, Gateway lost $58.5 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with a loss of $20.7 million, or 6 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts had been expecting a loss of 17 cents.
But Gateway CEO Ted Waitt said on CNBC that rising revenue quarter-over-quarter indicates Gateway is gaining share.
Overall, the PC industry remained sluggish. Shipments were down slightly year-over-year. Unexpected consumer demand, which helped boost numbers in the first quarter, disappeared
