....I know a computer professional (numerical theory specialist) who upgraded his PIII 800 Mhz for a P4 1.6 Mhz. For a number of years, he has done upgrades with each doubling of the clock speed, sort of a 'Moore's Law consumer'.

To his dismay, a number of the programs that he had written perform more slowly on the P4 than on the P3.

Intel changed the rules of the game when they cranked the P4. First time buyers wouldn't know it but some 'old-timers' felt cheated by the change in design...
