Yes, everyone on the scene was appalled at the charge. In retrospect, it is certain that Lord Raglan, the CIC, had not meant for the charge to occur as it did; that his order was confusing and misinterpreted by the courier who delivered it. On the other hand, the Russians were stunned by it and thrown into disarray. The survivors of the charge did not press their advantage at the end, and had they done so it could have easily become a major British victory instead of a debacle.

However, none of this changes the point that the men of the Brigade were not hapless fools. They were rather men of great courage who without hesitation did what was asked of them. We can always question orders later with the benefit of hindsight, but if we start doing that when the orders are given we will cease to be the bastion of strength in protecting the free world.
