Leading Taiwanese semiconductor foundry signs multi-million dollar
agreement for fab expansion
CHELMSFORD, Mass., July 22 /CNW/ -- Brooks-PRI Automation, Inc. (Nasdaq: BRKS), which delivers total automation for semiconductor manufacturing, today announced that TSMC has selected Brooks-PRI's Automated Material Handling System (AMHS) to handle virtually every interbay wafer movement for its 200mm fab in Tainan, Taiwan. The equipment will be integrated with Brooks-PRI's PROMIS(R) Manufacturing Execution System (MES) software, which TSMC uses to monitor and control the fab's overall manufacturing environment.
TSMC selected Brooks-PRI for this fab expansion based on its positive experience with the company's automation systems in earlier phases of the project. TSMC's Automation Department commented: "TSMC has found Brooks-PRI's AMHS and software to be very flexible and highly reliable. In addition, the Brooks-PRI team has been outstanding in their support of this project. TSMC looks forward to working with them to successfully complete the expansion of Fab 6."
Robert J. Therrien, president and CEO of Brooks-PRI Automation, noted that TSMC has been a long-standing customer of both Brooks and PRI hardware and software, and in fact uses Brooks-PRI products in each of its fabs. "Foundries such as TSMC face unusual material handling challenges due to the large mix of products manufactured," said Therrien. "The flexibility and software-driven intelligence inherent in Brooks-PRI's automation systems make us uniquely suited to meet these challenges. I believe our best customers are the ones we already have, and we're very pleased to be working with our valued customer TSMC on this project."
According to Therrien, the software behind Brooks-PRI's AMHS systems has become a critical competitive advantage. "Leading chip makers such as TSMC recognize that material handling challenges in today's modern fabs will be solved by the software's sophistication, rather than just hardware," said Therrien. "We believe that fact, combined with Brooks-PRI's prowess and patents in fab software, creates a new opportunity for us to extend our AMHS leadership position into the 300mm era." |
