Alan,

The other day I came across a dual (actually triple) input SOHO type router which has the kind of function you'd want if you really plan to subscribe to both cable and DSL, provided it works as advertised. Or at least the function I'd want <g>. It's the Nexland Pro800turbo; you can read about it here:

nexland.com

This router will (they claim) balance the load between two WAN connections such as DSL and cable. You configure the percent of the traffic you want each connection to carry. If one fails, it switches all the traffic to the other.

It also has a dial backup, so (again if it works as advertised), if both broadband connections fail then the router would automatically call a dial-up ISP through a phone modem. It has an 8-port ethernet switch on the LAN side that will allow you to connect PCs.

Note: I have no experience at all with Nexland myself. This is NOT a recommendation, just pointing you at it. It's the first load balancing router I've seen in the sub-commercial market, though I certainly don't claim to track this market carefully.

Provantage (www.provantage.com) has it advertised for $349, so this is a bit pricier piece of gear than most home-office type routers. For instance, I and most of the people I know use the Linksys BEFSR41, which can be had for $60-$70. But I don't have two broadband connections, either <g>.
