I agree that there can be a certain nobility in monumental failure, but not when it is stupid and pointless.

And I agree with that. The Charge, though, may not be a good example of that. It has been controversial ever since. It seems to have been more of a mistake. There is one theory that Lord Raglan's intended order was deliberately sabotaged by his aide-de-camp. In any case, there was a point to it (winning the war, or at least that ongoing battle) and those involved, from top to bottom, were not stupid.
